Food creator Nick DiGiovanni decided to find out by putting some of the world’s most advanced cooking robots and kitchen gadgets to the test in a series of head-to-head challenges.
The results were far more surprising than many people expected.

The actual breakdown of how the Human Chef vs. AI challenge went
The competition was divided into three levels, starting with everyday kitchen gadgets and ending with a humanoid robot capable of preparing a full meal.
In the first round, DiGiovanni faced off against common automated kitchen tools. Some machines performed exceptionally well. A robotic food processor diced potatoes into perfect cubes in seconds, while an automated pizza-making system distributed toppings more evenly than a human could.
However, the robots weren’t perfect.
Automatic stirrers burned expensive pine nuts and even melted during one test. A high-tech smart toaster produced uneven toast, while a robot vacuum struggled to clean a simple flour spill, spreading the mess rather than removing it efficiently.
By the end of the first round, the human chef emerged victorious with a 3-2 win.
When a Robot Beat the Chef
The second round featured Moley, a fully robotic kitchen system reportedly capable of preparing thousands of recipes.
While humans still had to prep ingredients beforehand, Moley handled the actual cooking process on its own. The robot prepared a spaghetti puttanesca while DiGiovanni cooked his own signature pasta dish.
The meals were then evaluated in a blind taste test.
In one of the biggest surprises of the competition, the judge preferred the robot’s pasta. The taster described the dish as more complex and flavorful, giving Moley the win.
For many viewers, this was the moment that demonstrated AI’s growing potential in professional kitchens.
A Humanoid Robot Takes on Steak Night
The final challenge introduced Neo Beta, a humanoid robot designed to move and interact much like a person.
Neo Beta selected a filet mignon while DiGiovanni prepared a ribeye steak. The robot cooked the meal largely on its own, requiring minimal assistance.
When both steaks were cut open, the results shocked even the chef.
Both steaks were cooked to nearly perfect temperatures and looked restaurant-quality. The robot’s plate featured steak, potatoes, and asparagus, while the chef presented his ribeye with pistachio chimichurri.
No official winner was declared in the final round, leaving viewers to decide for themselves.
What the Experiment Revealed
While robots demonstrated impressive precision and consistency, they still struggled with tasks that required flexibility and quick decision-making.
Machines excelled when following programmed instructions and repeating the same motions. Humans, however, proved better at adapting when something unexpected happened, correcting mistakes, and adding creative touches that make meals memorable.
For now, AI doesn’t appear ready to completely replace professional chefs. Instead, the experiment suggests that the future of cooking may involve chefs and robots working side-by-side, with machines handling repetitive tasks while humans focus on creativity, innovation, and the dining experience.
