The music world is mourning the loss of legendary singer Bonnie Tyler, whose powerhouse vocals made Total Eclipse of the Heart one of the most recognizable songs of the 1980s. Tyler died on July 8, 2026, at the age of 75, according to a statement released by her family.

Her official team confirmed that Tyler passed away in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read.

The family added that additional information would be shared at a later time and requested privacy during this difficult period.

Health Struggles Before Her Death

Tyler had experienced serious health complications in recent months. She underwent emergency intestinal surgery in May and was later placed in an induced coma while doctors treated her condition.

Although fans hoped the beloved singer would recover, news of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from around the globe.

Released in 1983, Total Eclipse of the Heart became Tyler’s signature hit and one of the biggest songs of the decade.

Earlier this year, Tyler revealed that despite the song’s incredible streaming success, she receives very little income from digital plays because she did not write the song.

“I never get tired of singing it,” Tyler told the BBC in January. “I love it because everyone can’t wait to sing it.”

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Wales, Tyler grew up in a working-class family as one of six children. Her father worked as a coal miner while her mother cared for the household.
