Attorneys in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ $100M Defamation Lawsuit Seek to Withdraw Over Months of Unpaid Fees
Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal troubles just got a new wrinkle — this time, it’s his own lawyers walking away.
Michael Tremonte, a partner at Sher Tremonte LLP, filed a declaration Monday in the Southern District of New York asking to withdraw as Combs’ counsel in his $100 million defamation lawsuit. Tremonte said Combs “has not paid a substantial balance of attorney’s fees, costs, and expenses,” and that Combs is more than six months behind on fees.
It’s not just about money. The filing describes “a total breakdown in cooperation and communication” between Combs and the firm, claiming Combs has declined to make himself available for direct communication about his cases for over four months. Sher Tremonte argues that lack of cooperation has made it impossible to keep providing effective legal representation.
Diddy’s Side of the Story
Combs isn’t taking the narrative lying down. Speaking through his spokesperson Juda Engelmayer, he claims he pulled the plug on the relationship — not the other way around. He insisted he made the decision to switch lawyers because he wouldn’t let anyone take advantage of him by running up unapproved charges on his bill.
So depending on who you believe, this is either a law firm cutting off a client who stopped paying, or a client firing lawyers he thinks padded his invoice. Either way, a judge hasn’t ruled on any of it — the fee dispute has not been decided by a court, so the withdrawal request alone doesn’t establish that Combs actually owes what’s alleged.
What the Lawsuit Is Actually About
This case has nothing to do with Combs’ criminal conviction — it’s a separate civil defamation suit, originally filed in January 2025 and later expanded to a $100 million ask. Combs is suing Courtney Burgess, attorney Ariel Mitchell, and Nexstar Media Inc. (parent company of NewsNation), alleging they made false claims about him during a NewsNation broadcast. Some of the claims accuse Mitchell of saying on air that Combs drugged victims using baby oil.
Here’s the twist: Combs is currently winning this fight. A federal judge recently rejected Mitchell’s motion to dismiss, meaning Combs’ claims against her move forward, while some claims against Nexstar were dismissed this month, with others still alive. This latest legal drama comes not long after Combs shocked the courtroom with a new look and pleaded not guilty again in a separate matter.
What Happens Next
The parties were set for a telephone conference on September 17 to discuss next steps, with court directions flagging possible mediation or a settlement conference. If the judge grants Sher Tremonte’s withdrawal, Combs will need new counsel to take over the civil case unless another attorney already representing him steps in. The change would affect who’s managing the case — not the strength of the surviving claims themselves.
Combs, 56, is currently serving a 50-month federal sentence after being convicted on prostitution-related transportation charges; he was acquitted of the more serious racketeering and sex-trafficking counts. It’s the latest twist in a saga that’s included everything from prison rule violations to shifting release dates, and even ripple effects for people in his orbit, like Cassie Ventura, who is expecting her third child with husband Alex Fine.
