A 25-year-old woman who thought she was dealing with harmless mouth ulcers is now facing life-changing surgery after being diagnosed with rare oral cancer.

A “harmless” symptom that wasn’t harmless at all

For two years, Olivia Donnelly lived with painful sores on her tongue. Like many people, she assumed they were nothing more than recurring mouth ulcers — something uncomfortable, but not dangerous.

Doctors initially agreed. Early tests and biopsies didn’t show anything alarming, and she was told it could be related to an immune system issue.

But the symptoms never fully went away.

What seemed like a minor, frustrating health issue would eventually become something far more serious.

@olivia22x22 this took a lot for me to share and open up but if this could help just one person then that would mean the world. It’s a very personal nerve wracking journey I’m going through but dms are open for anyone with questions or needing support 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or medical advisor, this is purely to raise awareness and document my journey to help others #cancerawareness #tonguecancer #mouthcancer #fyp #macmillan ♬ original sound – Liv

The moment everything changed

Earlier this year, Olivia noticed something new: a hard lump forming on her tongue.

After undergoing another biopsy, she was told to wait several weeks for results. Instead, just two weeks later, the hospital called her back in urgently.

She already knew something was wrong.

At the appointment, doctors confirmed her worst fear — the lump was cancerous.

From uncertainty to life-altering surgery

Further scans revealed the full extent of the diagnosis.

Doctors told Olivia she would need to undergo major surgery:
around 40% of her tongue will be removed.

To reconstruct it, surgeons will use a skin graft from her wrist. She will also have lymph nodes removed to check whether the cancer has spread, with radiation therapy potentially required afterward.

The recovery process is expected to take months.

“I’ve got to learn to speak again”

In a series of TikTok updates, Olivia has been documenting the emotional and physical reality of her diagnosis.

She explained that her life will not only change medically, but functionally:

  • Relearning how to speak
  • Relearning how to eat
  • Adapting to long-term recovery

She described the experience as overwhelming, saying her emotions shift constantly between shock, sadness, and acceptance.

A rare cancer that is rising in younger people

Tongue and oral cancers are still relatively rare, but cases are increasing.

According to the National Cancer Institute, oral cancers affect a small percentage of the population, but incidence rates have been rising by roughly 2% per year.

Doctors emphasized that in Olivia’s case, there was no clear cause — and it may have simply been bad luck.

She also shared that while she had previously vaped occasionally, medical professionals did not directly link it to her diagnosis.

Why this story matters

What makes Olivia’s case particularly alarming is how ordinary her early symptoms appeared.

Mouth ulcers are extremely common and usually harmless. But persistent or unusual changes in the mouth — especially ones that don’t heal — can sometimes signal something more serious.

Her story is now resonating widely online because it highlights a difficult truth:
serious illness can begin with symptoms people are trained to ignore.

Sharing her journey publicly

Despite everything, Olivia is choosing to document her experience publicly to raise awareness.

Her goal is simple:
to help others recognize symptoms earlier than she did.

Key takeaway

Most mouth sores are harmless — but persistent or unusual changes should never be ignored.

Early evaluation can make a significant difference, especially with cancers that develop in subtle ways.
