Mom Gives Birth in Her Sleep, Nurses Discover Newborn Under Blankets Moments Later

A Canadian mother is opening up about a birth experience she says left her “fully traumatized” after she unknowingly gave birth while asleep. Nurses searching for her baby’s heartbeat eventually realized the newborn had already been delivered and was lying quietly beneath a pile of blankets.

The emotional story has gone viral after Carolina Moreno, 27, shared the experience on TikTok, revealing how what began as a routine labor quickly turned into a frightening moment for everyone in the delivery room.

Fortunately, despite the terrifying circumstances, Moreno’s son was found healthy and has continued to thrive.

A Routine Induction Took an Unexpected Turn

Moreno, a mother of three from Canada, said she was admitted for an induced labor after testing positive for Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a common bacteria that requires antibiotics during labor to help protect newborns.

Because she was already several centimeters dilated and her cervix had begun thinning, medical staff started antibiotics before breaking her water and administering Pitocin to stimulate contractions.

As labor intensified, Moreno requested an epidural after experiencing significant discomfort.

Initially, she said the epidural didn’t appear to be working, so she administered additional doses through the patient-controlled button before finally becoming comfortable enough to fall asleep.

Nurses Couldn’t Find the Baby’s Heartbeat

While Moreno slept, nurses routinely entered the room to monitor the baby’s heartbeat. According to Moreno, the fetal monitor had previously lost the signal several times because the baby was active and frequently changed positions.

This time, however, the monitor continued failing to detect a heartbeat.

As nurses searched for the signal, Moreno gradually woke up and began to sense something was wrong.

She later recalled thinking the worst when a nurse commented that her stomach suddenly felt different.

“I thought my baby was dead,” Moreno said while recounting the experience.

The Baby Had Already Been Born

As Moreno adjusted her legs, she felt something resting on the bed.

Expecting almost anything but her newborn, she was stunned when a nurse lifted the blankets and discovered her son lying face down beneath them.

The newborn was silent and not crying.

Moreno immediately feared the worst.

Medical staff quickly picked up the infant and stimulated him until he began crying, confirming he was breathing and healthy.

Her husband, who had also been asleep, reportedly believed he had simply slept through the birth before realizing everyone in the room had unknowingly missed the moment the baby arrived.

“He Delivered Himself”

Speaking afterward, Moreno explained that no one—including the nurses—realized the baby had already been born.

Instead, they continued searching for a heartbeat inside her womb because there had been no obvious indication that delivery had occurred.

“The nurse didn’t deliver him; he delivered himself,” Moreno said.

Once the newborn was safely in his mother’s arms, doctors confirmed he was healthy.

Three Months Later, Baby Is Thriving

Today, Moreno says her son is now three months old and is doing exceptionally well.

She describes him as an unusually calm baby who rarely cries and easily falls asleep, something she believes helps explain why he remained so quiet after birth.

Although she still describes the delivery as deeply traumatic, Moreno says she feels incredibly fortunate that her son suffered no lasting complications.

“He was born in perfect health,” she said.

Could This Happen to Other Mothers?

While rapid labor and extremely quiet newborns are uncommon, medical experts note that every delivery is different. Fast births—sometimes called precipitous labor—can occur unexpectedly, particularly in women who have previously given birth.
