What can you do in Los Angeles with no money? Start here. LA has more free museums than any other US city.
1. The Getty Center | Area: Brentwood
- Cost: Free. Parking $20, $15 after 3pm.
- Need to know: Reservations required. Book 2 weeks out for weekends.
- Local tip: Park at Sepulveda Blvd and take the free Getty shuttle to skip the parking fee. Or take Metro 734 bus.
- Best time: Weekday mornings for the architecture shots with no crowds.

2. The Broad | Area: DTLA
- Cost: Free general admission. Special exhibits extra.
- Need to know: Timed tickets release on the 1st of each month at 10am for the following month. They go in 60 seconds.
- Local tip: No reservation? Show up at 4pm for standby line. Usually 20 min wait weekdays.

3. Griffith Observatory | Area: Los Feliz / Griffith Park
- Is Griffith Observatory free? Yes, the building + telescopes + grounds are 100% free. No ticket needed.
- What costs money: Samuel Oschin Planetarium shows: $10 adults, $6 seniors/kids. Buy tickets day-of only.
- Parking: $10/hr in main lot, $5/hr in lower lots. Street parking on Vermont/Western is free but 2hr limit and fills by 9am.
- Local tips:
- Park free at Greek Theatre Lot D after 5pm and walk 10 min uphill.
- Take DASH Observatory bus from Vermont/Sunset Red Line for $0.50.
- Best free show: Sunset from the lawn. Get there 1 hour before to claim grass.
- Hours: Closed Mondays. Tues-Fri 12pm-10pm, Weekends 10am-10pm.

4. California Science Center | Area: Exposition Park / DTLA
- Cost: Free general admission including Space Shuttle Endeavour.
- What costs money: IMAX + special exhibits.
- Need to know: Reserve free tickets online. Parking $15.
- Local tip: Park at Expo Park Rose Garden for free street parking and walk 5 min.

- Cost: Free. Parking $20.
- Need to know: Timed ticket required even though free. Book 3 weeks out.
- Local tip: All tickets include parking. Carpool to split it.

6. Hammer Museum | Area: Westwood
- Cost: Free always.
- Need to know: No reservations needed. Parking $8 with validation.
- Local tip: UCLA students get free parking with ID. Free public tours Thursdays 12:30pm.

7. GRAMMY Museum | Area: DTLA / L.A. Live
- Cost: Free for LA County residents weekdays after 3pm with ID. Otherwise $18.
- Need to know: Bring proof of LA County residency. No reservation needed for free window.
- Local tip: Go at 3pm sharp. You get 2.5 hours before 5:30pm close. Parking at L.A. Live is $$$. Take Metro to Pico Station.

8. Institute of Contemporary Art, LA (ICA LA) | Area: DTLA Arts District
- Cost: Free always. No tickets.
- Need to know: Closed Mon-Tues. Street parking or paid lots.
- Local tip: Walk to Arts District breweries after. Very dog-friendly area.

9. Japanese American National Museum | Area: DTLA / Little Tokyo
- Cost: Free every Thursday 5pm-8pm + all day third Thursday of each month. Otherwise $16.
- Need to know: No reservation needed for free hours. Regular admission free with SNAP/EBT via Museums for All.
- Local tip: Go Thursday evenings, then grab ramen in Little Tokyo. Street parking free after 6pm.

10. LACMA – Los Angeles County Museum of Art | Area: Miracle Mile
- Cost: Free for LA County residents weekdays after 3pm with ID. Free for everyone second Tuesday of the month. Free for Bank of America cardholders first full weekend monthly.
- Need to know: Even if you miss free days, the outdoor art is 100% free 24/7: Urban Light, Levitated Mass, and Chris Burden’s Metropolis II visible from outside.
- Free event: Jazz at LACMA, Fridays 6pm-8pm, late April through November. Free outdoor concert on the plaza. No ticket needed. Bring blankets/chairs.
- Local tip: Urban Light is best at blue hour, 20 min after sunset. For Jazz at LACMA, arrive by 5pm to claim lawn space. Free street parking on 6th St after 6pm. Parking $16 or street on 6th St.

11. La Brea Tar Pits & Hancock Park | Area: Miracle Mile
- Cost: The outdoor tar pits, Lake Pit, and Hancock Park are free. Museum admission $15 adults.
- Need to know: You can see bubbling tar, mammoth statues, and smell the iconic methane for free. Free restrooms on site.
- Local tip: If you have kids, let them run around Hancock Park after. Great picnic spot. If you have time/money, the museum is excellent, especially for kids. Otherwise, 20 min at the free Lake Pit is still a core LA experience.

12. The Nethercutt Collection | Area: Sylmar
- Cost: Free. Reservations required for museum + auto collection tours.
- Need to know: One of the world’s best car + mechanical music collections. Tours Thurs-Sat only.
- Local tip: Book 1 month out. No kids under 8 on tours. Free parking.

13. California African American Museum (CAAM) | Area: Exposition Park / DTLA
- Cost: Free always. No tickets needed.
- Need to know: Closed Mondays. In Exposition Park next to Science Center and Rose Garden.
- Local tip: Make it a free Exposition Park day: CAAM → Rose Garden → Science Center. Park once.

Free Views & Hollywood Sign Hikes
14. Hollywood Sign: Lake Hollywood Park | Area: Hollywood Hills
- Cost: Free. Street parking is plentiful, but it fills fast on weekends.
- Difficulty: Easy 0.5mi flat walk for the shot.
- Need to know: The road to the park is steep in sections but overall not bad. If you have mobility issues or use a wheelchair, this isn’t the best option due to the incline and lack of paved paths to the viewpoint.
- Local tip: Don’t GPS “Hollywood Sign”. Locals will hate you. Use “Lake Hollywood Park”. Arrive before 8am for easy parking on Canyon Lake Dr. After 10am, expect to circle or walk 10+ minutes.
15. Runyon Canyon Park | Area: Hollywood
- Cost: Free. One of LA’s most iconic free hikes.
- Access points:
- Fuller Ave Gate: 2000 N Fuller Ave. Street parking, steepest start, most popular.
- Mulholland Drive Gate: 7301 Mulholland Dr. Small lot + street, easier grade, best views.
- Wattles Garden Park: 1824 N Curson Ave. Free lot, shadiest/least crowded entrance.
- Need to know: Dog-friendly, off-leash area at top. No bathrooms on trail. Cell service is spotty.
- Local tip: Go before 8am or after 6pm for parking and fewer influencers. Sunset from the top is unreal but bring a headlamp for hike down.

16. Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook | Area: Culver City / Baldwin Hills
- Cost: Free. Parking $6 or street free.
- Why go: 360° view of LA to ocean. 282 stairs = free workout with a view.
- Local tip: Go at golden hour. You can see Downtown, Century City, and Catalina on clear days.

17. Barnsdall Art Park | Area: East Hollywood
- Cost: Free. Views of the city + Hollyhock House exterior.
- Need to know: Park closes at sunset. Free parking lot on site.
- Local tip: Sunday 6pm sunset yoga is donation-based. Free if you just stretch on the lawn.

18. Angels Point + Elysian Park | Area: Echo Park / Elysian Park
- Cost: Free. Oldest park in LA.
- Local tip: Angels Point has skyline views + Arthur J. Will memorial. Chavez Ravine Arboretum has 100+ tree species. Free parking.

Free Beaches, Piers & Outdoor LA
19. Venice Beach Boardwalk + Canals | Area: Venice
- Cost: Free.
- Parking hack: Rose Ave + Main St meters are free after 6pm and Sundays. Or park at Venice Blvd + Abbot Kinney and walk 15 min.
- Local tip: Canals are 2 blocks east. Free, quiet, zero tourists.

20. Santa Monica Pier + 3rd Street Promenade | Area: Santa Monica / Westside
- Cost: Free to walk both. Rides on pier cost $$.
- Local tip: Park at Structure 4. First 90 min free. After you do the pier, walk 3 blocks to 3rd Street Promenade for free street performers, people-watching, and window shopping. It’s LA’s best free “mall” experience.
- 2026 Update: Since the January 2025 LA fires, Malibu beaches and PCH access are still limited. That’s pushing more crowds to Santa Monica Pier and Venice, especially weekends. Expect heavier traffic and fuller lots than usual. If you need ADA access, the pier has ramps and elevators, but it’s a long walk from parking structures and gets very crowded. Weekday mornings are best for wheelchairs/strollers.

21. Manhattan Beach Pier | Area: South Bay
- Cost: Free. Free street parking 3+ blocks from beach.
- Local tip: Aquarium at end of pier is free. Best free sunset spot in South Bay with fewer tourists than Santa Monica.

22. Echo Park Lake | Area: Echo Park
- Cost: Free. Pedal boats cost $.
- Local tip: Lotus flowers bloom July-August. Best skyline photo spot in LA. Free parking on side streets 2+ blocks away.

23. Annenberg Community Beach House | Area: Santa Monica
- Cost: Free to enter grounds, splash pad, playground. Pool costs $.
- Need to know: Free public access to historic Marion Davies guest house. Parking $3/hr or street free.
- Local tip: Go for sunset. Free gallery + beach access. Far less crowded than Santa Monica Pier.
- 2026 Update: Open and unaffected by 2025 fires. Good Malibu alternative while PCH is limited.

Free Historic & Cultural Los Angeles
24. Olvera Street | Area: DTLA / El Pueblo
- Cost: Free to meander through the colorful stalls and visit the free museums like Avila Adobe, the oldest house in LA.
- Need to know: It’s tricky to spend *no* money here. The pan dulce, taquitos, and leather goods are tempting. But browsing, people-watching, and museums are 100% free.
- Local tip: Check the plaza calendar. There are often free concerts, Aztec dance performances, and major events for Día de los Muertos and Las Posadas. Avila Adobe is open 9am-4pm daily.

25. Hollywood Forever Cemetery | Area: Hollywood
- Cost: Free to enter 8am-5pm daily. Maps $1.
- Need to know: This is an active cemetery + cultural landmark. Be respectful. Home to graves of Judy Garland, Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille.
- Local tip: Summer = free Cinespia movie nights on the lawn. Arrive 3 hours early with blanket. Otherwise, daytime strolling is free and peaceful. Great architecture + peacocks roaming.

- Local tip: 2nd floor book tunnel + vault are free for photos. Go weekday mornings before influencers arrive.

- Cost: Free. Bradbury Building lobby only, 9am-5pm weekdays.

- Local tip: Best photo angle is from Grand Ave across the street at sunset. Free self-guided audio tour 10am-2pm.

- Local tip: This is where they filmed The Big Lebowski, X-Men, and The Social Network. Super quiet weekday mornings. Steep paths, not great for wheelchairs. Great free date spot.
