A Brazilian woman accused of pretending to be a 12-year-old girl spent more than a year living with a family that believed they were caring for a vulnerable child. Now, the bizarre deception has landed her in criminal court.

Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, now 38, was arrested in June in Joinville, Santa Catarina, after authorities say she had spent roughly 14 months living with a family while claiming to be a young girl named “Gabriele.”

The family reportedly believed they were helping a child who had escaped an abusive home.

Instead, investigators say, the person they had welcomed into their home was an adult woman allegedly using a false identity to obtain housing, food, medical care and other benefits.

The case has become one of Brazil’s strangest recent fraud investigations — and authorities say it may be only one chapter in a much longer pattern.

She Didn’t Just Lie About Her Age

According to prosecutors, Oliveira initially approached the family through a church and presented herself as an 18-year-old.

Her story later changed.

She allegedly claimed she was actually only 11 or 12 years old and had suffered severe abuse. She reportedly told the family that forced hormone treatments during childhood had contributed to her adult appearance.

To reinforce the story, investigators say she adopted deliberately childlike behavior.

Reports say she used a baby bottle and pacifier, slept with a comfort object and spoke in an intentionally childlike voice.

She also allegedly claimed to have autism and presented herself as a deeply traumatized child who needed protection.

The family reportedly became so convinced that they treated her as a daughter and even held a birthday celebration for her supposed 12th birthday.

The Family Finally Became Suspicious

The elaborate story began falling apart when a relative became suspicious of Oliveira’s age.

The relative reportedly searched online and discovered reports about a remarkably similar case involving the same woman.

That discovery prompted the family to contact police.

Investigators then began looking into Oliveira’s history — and allegedly found a trail stretching across multiple Brazilian states.

Authorities say she had used different names and similar stories in previous encounters, often presenting herself as a vulnerable child in need of shelter or assistance.

Investigators have linked her to cases involving states including Santa Catarina, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Police Say This Wasn’t a One-Time Scheme

The most startling part of the case may be how long authorities believe the alleged deception had been going on.

Brazilian police and prosecutors have described previous incidents in which Oliveira allegedly presented herself as a minor and obtained help from families, churches, social-service organizations and other people who believed they were assisting a vulnerable child.

In one Paraná investigation, police alleged she posed as a 13-year-old girl suffering from terminal leukemia while communicating with a religious prayer group.

Police said 12 people in the group were allegedly deceived by the story. Oliveira denied the accusations when questioned in that investigation.

In another alleged incident, she reportedly posed as a teenage girl during the pandemic and developed such a strong emotional relationship with members of a religious group that one victim eventually had the false name she used tattooed on her wrist.

She Was Even Taken Into a Shelter for Minors

The allegations extend beyond private families.

Authorities in Recife previously encountered Oliveira after she reportedly claimed to be 12 years old and was placed into a shelter system for vulnerable minors in 2023.

A psychologist who later spoke publicly about the case said staff noticed that her behavior appeared unusually childish, but also believed there were physical characteristics suggesting she was an adult.

That encounter became another part of the growing picture investigators were assembling about her alleged use of false identities.

What Is She Accused of Doing?

In the Santa Catarina case, Oliveira is facing charges of fraud and false identity.

Prosecutors allege that she deliberately created a false story of abuse and vulnerability in order to obtain material benefits from the family that took her in.

Those benefits reportedly included housing, food, transportation and medical expenses.

She was arrested June 2 and remained in custody after her initial arrest was converted to preventive detention. The Santa Catarina court accepted the prosecution’s case, formally making her a defendant.

Her Mental Health Has Also Become Part of the Case

Oliveira’s defense requested a psychiatric evaluation, and the court ordered examinations.

Reports later indicated there were differences between evaluations conducted by court-appointed experts and experts selected by the defense.

Her lawyer has argued that the mental-health evidence is relevant to the case and has said the defense intends to challenge the prosecution’s evidence and demonstrate her innocence.

Oliveira has denied accusations in at least some of the investigations against her.

The Case Reached Court This Week

The court scheduled an instruction and judgment hearing in Joinville for August 19, 2026.

The hearing was expected to include testimony from the prosecution, defense and Oliveira herself, with final arguments and a later ruling expected to follow.

As of the latest reporting, there had been no conviction in the Santa Catarina case.

That distinction matters: Oliveira is facing criminal charges, but the allegations have not been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Strange Case Has Drawn Comparisons to Orphan

The bizarre premise has inevitably reminded people of the movie Orphan, which centers on an adult woman who disguises herself as a child and is taken in by a family.

But Oliveira’s alleged story is a real criminal case — and investigators say the deception was not limited to one family.

The most unusual element may be the alleged longevity of the scheme.

Rather than simply changing her age on a document, investigators say Oliveira repeatedly constructed entire identities around being a vulnerable child, using emotional stories, childlike behavior and claims of abuse to gain the trust of people who believed they were helping someone in desperate need.

Now, after years of alleged deception across Brazil, the woman prosecutors say was pretending to be a child is facing the consequences as an adult defendant in a criminal case.

For the family involved, however, the most disturbing question may be much simpler: How do you discover that the “child” you spent more than a year caring for was actually a 38-year-old woman?

This story is based on reporting by Brazilian police, prosecutors, and the courts. Oliveira is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
