Millions of Facebook users could soon see a little extra money heading their way.
Nearly three years after the deadline to file claims in Meta’s historic $725 million privacy settlement, some claimants are receiving a second payment from the fund. The new distribution comes after millions of dollars remained unclaimed following the initial round of payouts, prompting a court-approved redistribution of the remaining settlement funds.
If you previously filed a valid claim and received compensation, you may qualify for another payment.
Why Is Facebook Sending More Settlement Money?
The additional payments stem from the settlement reached in a lawsuit accusing Meta of improperly sharing users’ personal data with third parties, including the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica.
The lawsuit alleged that Facebook failed to adequately protect user information, allowing data from millions of users to be accessed without their knowledge. While Meta denied wrongdoing, the company agreed to pay $725 million to resolve the claims.
After the first round of payments was distributed, some recipients never cashed their checks or claimed their funds. Rather than allowing that money to sit unused, the remaining funds are now being redistributed to eligible claimants.
Who Qualifies for the Second Payment?
You may be eligible if:
- You submitted a valid claim before the August 2023 filing deadline.
- Your claim was approved by the settlement administrator.
- You received and accepted your first settlement payment.
- You had a Facebook account in the United States between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022.
Unfortunately, individuals who missed the original filing deadline cannot submit new claims. The settlement is closed, and only previously approved claimants are eligible for the additional distribution.
How Much Money Will You Receive?
The second payment isn’t expected to be large, but for many recipients, it’s an unexpected bonus.
Reports suggest most qualifying users could receive between approximately $4 and $8, depending on how the remaining settlement funds are allocated and how many eligible claimants participate in the redistribution.
The original payout averaged around $30 per claimant, although some users received more based on factors such as the length of time they maintained a Facebook account during the covered period.
When Will Payments Arrive?
According to reports, the second wave of payments is expected to begin rolling out in June 2026.
Recipients may receive their funds through the same method selected during the original claim process, including:
- Direct deposit
- PayPal
- Venmo
- Zelle
- Prepaid debit card
- Paper check
Many eligible users have already reported receiving emails notifying them that an additional payment is on the way.
Why This Settlement Matters
The Facebook privacy lawsuit became one of the largest data privacy settlements in U.S. history and marked a major moment in the ongoing debate over how technology companies collect, store, and share personal information.
While a second payment of just a few dollars may not dramatically impact anyone’s finances, it serves as a reminder of the lasting consequences companies can face when consumers believe their privacy has been compromised.
For eligible claimants, it’s also a welcome surprise in an era when unexpected deposits are few and far between.
If you filed a claim years ago and received a payment from the original settlement, it may be worth checking your email—and your bank account—over the coming weeks.
