Do you think gas prices are high right now? You’re definitely not alone — and according to new reports, there may actually be some relief on the horizon.
As Americans continue reacting to painful prices at the pump, Donald Trump says he wants to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax in an effort to help drivers during the ongoing Iran conflict and oil supply concerns.
During an interview with CBS News on Monday morning, Trump said the administration is looking at removing the gas tax “for a period of time” before eventually bringing it back once prices stabilize.
“I think it’s a great idea,” Trump said. “We’re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we’ll let it phase back in.”
The comments come as gas prices have surged dramatically across the country. According to AAA, prices have reportedly climbed more than 50% since the Iran war began earlier this year, with the national average surpassing $4.52 per gallon over the weekend.
Why Are Gas Prices So High?
A major reason behind the increase is growing instability in the Middle East, particularly surrounding Iran’s reported blockage of the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.
When oil movement slows globally, prices often rise quickly for consumers in the United States.
For drivers in places like Los Angeles and across California, where gas is already among the most expensive in the country, the increases have been especially frustrating.
What Would a Gas Tax Suspension Actually Do?
The current federal gas tax adds:
- 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline
- 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel
Temporarily removing that tax could slightly lower what drivers pay at the pump.
However, Congress would still need to approve the move. The gas tax also funds road repairs, highways, and transportation infrastructure projects across the country.
Several lawmakers are already reacting to Trump’s proposal. Senator Josh Hawley said he plans to introduce legislation supporting a gas tax suspension, while Representative Anna Paulina Luna also announced plans for a House bill.
Americans Are Watching Closely
Online reactions have been intense, with many Americans saying even small savings would help right now as inflation continues affecting groceries, rent, travel, and daily life.
Others remain skeptical, questioning whether removing the tax would create enough relief if global oil prices continue climbing.
Still, one thing is clear: gas prices have become one of the biggest concerns for many households heading into the summer travel season.
Whether Congress moves forward or not, drivers across the country will likely be watching this story very closely.
