On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Moon fully blotted out the Sun over a stretch of the Northern Hemisphere — and it’s the kind of event that only rolls around every so often, so it’s worth understanding exactly what happened and, more importantly, whether you had any shot at seeing it from home.

Here’s the short version: if you live in the U.S., you almost certainly didn’t see a total eclipse. But depending on where you live, you might have caught a small bite taken out of the Sun anyway. Let’s break down who got the real show, who got a consolation prize, and who got nothing at all.

What Actually Happened Today

This was a total solar eclipse, meaning the Moon lined up perfectly between the Earth and the Sun and blocked it out completely — turning day briefly into a strange, cool twilight. The path of totality swept across Greenland, Iceland, and mainland Spain, with a sliver touching northern Russia and a small corner of Portugal.

Totality itself was brief, lasting under two and a half minutes at its longest, with the deepest darkness recorded off the western coast of Iceland. Crowds packed into parks in Stockholm, lawn chairs went up across northern and central Spain, and even NASA got in on it — flying a high-altitude research jet out of Iceland to chase the Moon’s shadow and study how the sudden drop in sunlight affects the atmosphere.

For Spain, this one mattered more than usual. The country hadn’t seen a total eclipse since 1912. Interestingly, they won’t have to wait long for the next one — another total eclipse crosses Spain on August 2, 2027, followed by an annular eclipse in January 2028. So Did the U.S. See Anything?

Yes — just not the dramatic version. The path of totality never touched North America, so nobody in the U.S. saw the sky go dark. What we got instead was a partial eclipse, where the Moon covers only part of the Sun’s disk, and only in the northern reaches of the country.

Roughly two dozen northern states had at least some sliver of visibility, in a band running from Alaska across the northern Plains, through the Great Lakes, and into New England. Everywhere else, the Moon’s shadow simply missed the continent entirely.

Alaska had the best seats in the country. Because Alaska sits closest to the path, it saw the deepest coverage of anywhere in the U.S. — and it happened in the morning. Nome saw around 43% of the Sun covered starting at roughly 8:25 a.m. AKDT, with Fairbanks close behind at a similar time.

New England came in second. Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont were the best-positioned states in the Lower 48, with coverage estimates ranging from around 15% up to the high 20s depending on location. Presque Isle, Maine, topped every city outside Alaska. The viewing window there fell in the early afternoon, with the partial eclipse beginning around 11:34 a.m. ET and peak coverage landing near 12:52 p.m. ET.

Everywhere else got a rounding error. Once you moved south and west of New England, the numbers dropped off fast. Detroit and Cleveland topped out around 3%. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, saw about 1.7% — the southern edge of where the eclipse was even technically visible. Chicago, Bismarck, and Rochester, Minnesota, registered a barely-there 0.1%, which astronomers describe less as “viewable” and more as a technical graze.

The rest of the country saw nothing. If you live in the South, the Southwest, or along most of the West Coast — including California — the Moon’s shadow didn’t reach you at all today. No glasses, no pinhole projector, no faint crescent. The eclipse simply wasn’t visible from your sky.

Today’s umbra tracked from off the coast of Iceland down through Spain before disappearing near North Africa. It never came close to North America, which is exactly why the U.S. experience ranged from “faint partial eclipse” to “nothing at all,” depending on latitude.
