When Amazon founder Jeff Bezos walks down the aisle for the second time, the real vows allegedly aren’t just romantic—they’re legal.
Bezos, currently worth a staggering $223.7 billion, is set to marry journalist and former news anchor Lauren Sanchez in a lavish three-day Venetian wedding starting today, June 24. But behind the glamour, the ceremony is reportedly grounded in something far more pragmatic: a heavily negotiated prenuptial agreement.
💸 A Billion-Dollar Lesson from Marriage No. 1
Bezos’ first marriage to MacKenzie Scott, which ended in 2019, became one of the most expensive divorces in history. Scott walked away with an estimated $38 billion in Amazon stock, and no prenup was in place. Their 25-year marriage began long before Bezos became a household name, with Scott even working as Amazon’s first employee.
The divorce also included allegations of infidelity, with reports claiming that Bezos had an affair with Sanchez—his now-fiancée. The couple’s union and its timing have remained a topic of public speculation since.

⏳ Alleged Delays in the Prenup Process
The couple announced their engagement in 2023, and allegedly planned to wed in Aspen in 2024. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, adjustments to the prenup delayed the ceremony. Sources claim Bezos’ legal team allegedly refused to allow the wedding to move forward until the contract was finalized.
Bezos, for his part, denied there were ever plans for an Aspen wedding, stating publicly on X (formerly Twitter) that no such location was confirmed.
🔐 What’s Allegedly Inside the Bezos-Sanchez Prenup?
Though the document is confidential, experts speculate that the prenup likely includes:
- Limitations on Sanchez’s access to Bezos’ assets
- Restricted or no alimony
- Financial protections for Bezos’ four children
- Estate planning provisions
- Jurisdictional legal enforcement
High-profile divorce attorney Robert Cohen (who is not involved in the Bezos case) told Fortune that Bezos’ experience in a prior high-stakes divorce would naturally lead to stronger protections this time around.
🏡 Multiple Homes, Multiple Legal Layers
Bezos owns real estate in Florida, California, Texas, D.C., and Maui—each with different prenup rules. California, for instance, requires complete financial disclosure, including foreign and domestic investments, real estate, and business holdings.
“You don’t want there to be anything that you omit or misidentify,” Cohen advises, even in jurisdictions that don’t legally require disclosure.
It’s also speculated that Bezos may have established irrevocable trusts to shield his wealth and benefit his children—tools often used by ultra-wealthy individuals for asset protection.
❤️ Prenups Are the New Romance?
Sanchez is also no stranger to prenups. She was previously married to Patrick Whitesell and allegedly had a prenup in place during that marriage. Their split reportedly resulted in a clean division of assets and custody of their two children.
As Sanchez and Bezos finally walk down the aisle, one thing is clear: marriage at this level is as much about strategy as it is about sentiment.
