Chris Hemsworth recently shared a humorous but revealing story about an awkward encounter with Billie Eilish at the 2024 Oscars. While the Marvel star is used to rubbing elbows with celebrities, one particular moment at the prestigious event left him feeling a bit embarrassed—and, according to him, may have cost him a friendship with the pop superstar.

The Cringeworthy Oscars Selfie

During a March 26, 2025, appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Hemsworth reflected on the moment he asked Eilish for a selfie, despite his initial reservations. The Avengers: Doomsday actor admitted that although he hesitated, he ultimately went for the photo because he knew his kids would love it.

“I got a photograph with Billie Eilish at the Oscars,” Hemsworth said. “I remember thinking, ‘Ah, don’t do it, don’t do it.’ But I was like, ‘No, my kids are going to love this.’ The moment I took it, I was like, ‘I went from work colleague to now like a fan.’”

He concluded with a laugh, “We will never be friends, never be best friends.”

While the comment was lighthearted, it highlights the fine line actors often walk when interacting with fellow celebrities—especially when one is a major fan of the other.

Hemsworth’s Habit of Breaking Photo Rules

This isn’t the first time Chris Hemsworth has found himself in the middle of a photo-related faux pas. The Thor actor admitted that he ignored the infamous no-selfie rule at the 2024 Met Gala, where he and his wife, Elsa Pataky, were co-chairs.

“Selfies everywhere,” he told E! News at the time. “A lot of selfies in my phone. Like, ‘When did I take that? Let’s delete that one.’”

Hemsworth explained that since he and Elsa live in Australia and don’t attend Hollywood events often, they still find them fresh and exciting. “So any sort of big awards show, we haven’t become jaded because it’s still new. And this in particular—an eclectic group of people, different than the normal crowd of film award shows we’ve been doing—sports people, musicians, artists. We had a really fun night.”

Billie Eilish’s Big Oscars Moment

Billie Eilish, meanwhile, had a major night at the 2024 Oscars. She and her brother Finneas took home their second Academy Award for Best Original Song with What Was I Made For? from the Barbie movie soundtrack. Their live performance of the song at the ceremony even brought many audience members to tears, earning a standing ovation.

While Hemsworth may not have secured a friendship with Eilish, his humorous take on the interaction provides a fun glimpse into the sometimes awkward world of celebrity interactions.
