Alec Baldwin, known for his Emmy-winning impersonation of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, has made a surprising claim—Melania Trump was allegedly a big fan of his portrayal.
During an event at the 92nd Street Y, Baldwin recounted an anecdote he heard from former Trump press secretary Sean Spicer. According to Baldwin, Spicer let slip backstage at the Emmys that the former First Lady found Baldwin’s impression to be spot-on.
Melania’s Alleged Reaction to Baldwin’s Trump
“Spicer—maybe he had a couple drinks, I don’t know; I wasn’t there… he says to the people at SNL, ‘Melania watches the show every Saturday night. And she points at the TV and says ‘That’s what he’s like! That is what he’s like! Exactly! Alec Baldwin is exactly like Donald!’” Baldwin told the crowd.
The actor said the revelation had everyone “gagging laughing” but also admitted that it made sense. “She loves when they give it to him, you know what I mean?” Baldwin added.
Trump’s Reactions to Baldwin’s Impression
While Melania may have found the impersonation entertaining, her husband was far from amused. Throughout Baldwin’s run as Trump on SNL from 2016 to 2020, the former President frequently criticized the show and Baldwin’s performance.
In a series of tweets, Trump called Baldwin’s portrayal “boring and unfunny” and accused SNL of media bias. In one tweet, he wrote, “Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!” On another occasion, he dismissed the show entirely, tweeting, “Just tried watching Saturday Night Live—unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse. Sad.”
Despite Trump’s disdain, Baldwin’s performance was widely recognized, earning him an Emmy Award in 2017. The actor stepped away from the role in 2020, with James Austin Johnson now portraying Trump on the show.
A Long-Standing Feud
Trump’s history with SNL dates back to before his presidency. He hosted the show in 2004 and again in 2015. However, as his political career escalated, so did his criticisms of the show’s satirical jabs at his administration.
In 2022, Trump even claimed that SNL was on its last legs, tweeting, “I once hosted Saturday Night Live, and the ratings were HUUUGE! Now, however, the ratings are lower than ever before, and the show will probably be put to rest.”
Whether or not Melania Trump truly found Baldwin’s impression accurate and amusing remains a point of speculation. But if Baldwin’s story is true, it adds another layer of irony to the ongoing clash between the former President and the long-running comedy show.
