Miley Cyrus is leaving a very famous part of her name behind.

The Grammy-winning singer is entering a new chapter of her career as simply “Miley”, dropping “Cyrus” from her professional identity across her social media and music promotion.

And while the move immediately had fans wondering whether there was a deeper family story behind the decision, her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, has now made his feelings clear: He supports it.

His reaction also adds an unexpectedly personal twist to a name change that initially looked like a dramatic break from the past.

Miley Cyrus Is Now Just “Miley”

The change first caught attention on August 31, when Miley changed her social media identity to simply “Miley” and shared a striking red-tinted image of herself with the caption “MILEY.”

The timing was significant.

Just days later, she announced her upcoming 10th studio album, Bass Persuades, making it clear that the shortened name is part of a larger professional era rather than a random social media change.

The album is scheduled for release on September 18, 2026, through Atlantic Records. The project will follow her 2025 album Something Beautiful.

Why Did Miley Drop “Cyrus”?

So far, Miley has not publicly said that she is legally changing her name or explained that she is permanently abandoning the Cyrus surname.

What has been established is that she is using Miley as her professional identity for this new musical chapter.

That distinction matters because speculation quickly turned toward her family history.

Miley has had a complicated relationship with her father over the years, and the idea of removing the surname he made famous naturally led some fans to wonder whether the move was a statement.

But Billy Ray’s response appears to put that theory to rest—at least for now.

Billy Ray Cyrus Says He Supports His Daughter

On September 2, Billy Ray shared a throwback family photo and addressed Miley’s decision directly.

He explained that he had actually spoken with his daughter about the change and told her he felt good about her using her first name professionally.

He also pointed out that within the family, he has always called her simply Miley.

Rather than viewing the change as a rejection of the family name, Billy Ray compared it to artists who became so recognizable that they no longer needed a surname.

He referenced legendary performers including Dolly, Cher, Elvis and Prince, calling Miley’s decision a “natural progression” for an established superstar.

That is a very different message from the family-drama narrative some fans initially expected.

There’s a Funny Connection to Billy Ray’s Own Name

Billy Ray also used the moment to reveal something many fans may not know about his own career.

Before “Achy Breaky Heart” became his signature hit in 1992, he said he had wanted to perform simply as “CYRUS.”

He recalled that his early merchandise and shirts carried the name CYRUS, suggesting that Miley’s one-name approach has an interesting connection to her father’s own ideas about his professional identity.

In fact, Billy Ray joked that if his record label had allowed him to use only “Cyrus,” things might have turned out differently for him.

His message ultimately came across as more proud father than offended dad.

Miley Is Entering a Major New Musical Era

The name change comes at a particularly important moment in Miley’s career.

Bass Persuades will be her 10th studio album, and she has described the project as deeply connected to emotion, love and the different experiences that shape a person’s life.

“Music takes hold of us,” Miley wrote when announcing the album. She described it as powerful and vulnerable, while also connecting the record to heartbreak, happiness and everything in between.

Earlier this year, Miley also described the album as a layered love story, explaining that it reflects where she is in her life and the evolution of her relationship with herself.

That makes the decision to go by simply Miley feel less like a rejection of her past and more like a declaration of where she is now.

The Timing Is Especially Emotional

There is another major piece of Miley’s current chapter that cannot be ignored.

Her godmother and longtime family friend Dolly Parton died on August 25 at age 80, shortly before Miley announced the new album.

Miley’s tribute to Parton was deeply personal. She described their relationship as something that existed beyond the public spotlight and recalled that one of their final conversations centered on music and metamorphosis.

She also said she believed Parton would want her to feel the loss, turn it into music and continue moving forward.

That idea of transformation makes the timing of Miley’s new era particularly striking.

Miley Is Headed Back to the Hollywood Bowl

The new era won’t stay on social media.

Miley is scheduled to perform two shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on October 16 and October 18, marking her return to the stage following her previous major live performance in Paris in 2025.

Those concerts will take place less than a month after Bass Persuades arrives.

For fans who have watched Miley move from Hannah Montana to one of pop music’s biggest stars, the symbolism is hard to miss: new music, a new visual identity and, professionally at least, a new name.

So, Is Miley Cyrus Really Becoming Just “Miley”?

For now, the safest answer is professionally, yes.

There has been no indication that Miley is legally changing her name. Instead, everything surrounding Bass Persuades points toward a deliberate artistic rebrand.

And Billy Ray Cyrus’ reaction makes one thing clear: whatever the reasoning behind the decision, he doesn’t appear to see it as a personal attack.

Instead, he sees his daughter stepping into the kind of rare musical territory occupied by artists who need only one name.

Miley.

And if her father is right, this could be less about leaving “Cyrus” behind—and more about becoming big enough that she no longer needs it.
