🍷 Alcohol Consumption Is Dropping Fast—Here’s What’s Driving the Decline

The global decline in alcohol consumption is accelerating—and it’s not just a health trend. From Gen Z rejecting drinking culture to inflation shrinking bar tabs, people around the world are drinking less than they did even five years ago. This shift is changing not only social habits but also the direction of the multi-billion-dollar alcohol industry.

📉 Global and U.S. Drinking Habits Are Falling

According to recent reports, global per-capita alcohol consumption declined to around 5.5 liters per year by 2019, with a further drop estimated through 2024. In the U.S., alcohol consumption decreased by 3–4% in 2024 alone—the steepest one-year drop since the 1960s.

Europe, once the heaviest-drinking region, saw a 17% reduction between 2000 and 2019. Meanwhile, countries like Finland and Canada are also showing sustained national declines.

The decline in alcohol consumption is especially sharp among people under 35. In the U.S., less than 60% of young adults report drinking alcohol—down from over 70% in the early 2000s. In Europe, nearly half of adults aged 18–34 now abstain completely.

🌱 Why Are People Drinking Less?

Several cultural, social, and economic shifts are driving this change:

  • Health consciousness: Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly prioritizing mental and physical wellness. Alcohol is being seen less as a social necessity and more as a toxin.
  • Sober-curious movement: Challenges like “Dry January” and trends on social media (#soberlife, #soberish) are normalizing alcohol-free living.
  • Weight-loss drugs: The rise of medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, which reduce appetite and alcohol cravings, is having a noticeable effect.
  • Financial stress: High prices at bars and restaurants, coupled with inflation, are making drinking less appealing—especially to younger consumers.
  • Work-from-home culture: With fewer happy hours and work drinks, social drinking opportunities have declined.

🍹 Rise of the Non-Alcoholic Market

As the decline in alcohol consumption continues, non-alcoholic alternatives are booming. Sales of non-alcoholic beer grew by 9% in 2024, and zero-proof spirits and mocktails are appearing on more menus than ever before.

Major beverage brands are investing in this shift. Treasury Wine Estates, for instance, announced a $15 million investment into no- and low-alcohol wine facilities. Meanwhile, bars are launching dedicated non-alcoholic cocktail lists to cater to demand.

💼 Big Alcohol Is Feeling the Pressure

Alcohol companies are facing headwinds. Wine consumption dropped by 4% in 2024, while beer and spirits fell by 3.5% and 3%, respectively. Stock values for top companies like Diageo and Constellation Brands have taken hits, leading to layoffs and portfolio changes.

That said, the industry is pivoting. Companies are focusing more on premium products and emerging markets like India and Brazil—where alcohol consumption is still rising—to offset losses in Western countries.

🔮 What’s Next?

The decline in alcohol consumption isn’t a passing phase. With younger generations leading the charge, it signals a long-term cultural reset. Social life, health, and identity are being redefined, and brands are being forced to keep up or fall behind.

Whether you’re a consumer cutting back or a business watching trends, one thing’s clear: the future of drinking is going to look very different.
