Air travelers have one more reason to double-check their bags before heading to the airport. The Transportation Security Administration has updated its prohibited items list, banning several popular hair tools from checked baggage.

The update comes as TSA continues balancing convenience and safety. While passengers no longer need to remove their shoes at security checkpoints, the long-standing 3.4-ounce liquid rule is still in place — and now, a few new restrictions apply.

Cordless hair tools now restricted in checked bags

If you rely on cordless styling tools, you may want to leave them at home or move them into your carry-on. Devices that use butane or gas cartridges are no longer permitted in checked luggage because they pose fire and explosion risks during flights.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the following are specifically prohibited in checked bags:

  • Cordless curling irons and flat irons powered by gas cartridges
  • Butane-fueled hair styling devices
  • Spare gas cartridges or refills for hair tools

Travelers who pack these in their checked luggage risk having their bags pulled by TSA.

These items can still be brought in carry-on luggage — but only if a safety cover is securely attached to prevent accidental activation. Traditional plug-in curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers remain approved for both carry-on and checked bags.

Surprisingly, these unusual items are TSA-approved

While TSA is cracking down on certain hair tools, the agency has no problem with some unusual and even quirky items making it through checkpoints. Here are a few unexpected examples:

  • Live lobsters: Allowed if they’re in a clear, spill-proof container. TSA agents will visually inspect them at the checkpoint.
  • Holiday lights: Whether you’re packing for Christmas in July or the December holidays, string lights are cleared for both checked and carry-on bags.
  • Cowboy spurs: Spurs are fine, as long as they’re off your boots and packed separately.
  • Antlers: Permitted in checked or carry-on bags, provided they fit under the seat or in overhead storage.
  • Harry Potter wands and toy lightsabers: Both are TSA-approved (though the agency jokes real lightsabers don’t exist yet).
  • Coffee and espresso makers: Allowed, but TSA suggests securing cords and packing them carefully.
  • Magic 8 Balls: Because they contain liquid, they’re banned from carry-ons but permitted in checked luggage.
  • Sewing machines: Cleared for travel in either checked or carry-on bags, but check with airlines for size limits.
  • Waffle irons: Yes, even your breakfast appliance can fly, as long as it fits in the plane’s storage spaces.

For the complete, regularly updated list of what’s permitted and what isn’t, travelers should consult TSA’s website before packing.
