According to eyewitnesses and officials, at approximately 3:00 a.m. CST on January 1, 2025, a driver intentionally rammed a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the actions as “very intentional,” stating that the driver was “trying to run over as many people as he possibly could” (CNN).

The suspect, who has not been named, died at the scene. Law enforcement officials reported that the suspect emerged from the vehicle shooting and was likely killed by police during an exchange of gunfire (CNN).

Two police officers were shot and injured during the incident but are in stable condition. The FBI is investigating the incident as an “act of terrorism” and is looking into possible associates of the suspect (CNN).

Eyewitness Jimmy Cothran described the harrowing scene, stating, “It was just unimaginable casualty… just the disfigurement and the bodies strewn, something you can’t unsee. You’ll never forget” (CNN).

Another eyewitness, Zion Parsons, recounted the terrifying moment when the vehicle barreled down the street, hitting pedestrians and throwing them into the air (CNN).

The incident occurred just hours before the city was set to host the Sugar Bowl, a major college football game, less than a mile away.
