Coffee Prices Surge: Why Your Morning Cup of Coffee is About to Get More Expensive

According to the latest Consumer Price Index report, roasted coffee prices climbed 2.5% in January compared to the previous year, while instant coffee spiked even more at 7.1%.

Experts point to a “perfect price storm” affecting the global coffee market. Climate change has hit top-producing countries like Brazil and Vietnam hard, impacting crop yields and driving up costs.

Brazil, the world’s leading producer of arabica coffee beans, endured record-high temperatures in 2024, alongside devastating forest fires that damaged crops. Meanwhile, Vietnam, a dominant force in robusta production, suffered severe droughts that further strained supply chains.

The Ripple Effect on Consumers

With coffee beans becoming more expensive, major companies are adjusting their pricing strategies. Keurig Dr Pepper CFO Sudhanshu Priyadarshi confirmed that the company expects continued coffee inflation throughout 2025 and plans to offset rising costs with price hikes.

Maxwell House Coffee and other household brands may soon follow suit, making a budget-friendly cup of joe harder to come by.

However, not all companies are feeling the strain equally. Starbucks, for instance, has leveraged hedging strategies to shield itself from immediate price spikes, allowing it to maintain stable prices—at least for now.

Instant Coffee Hit the Hardest

Instant coffee drinkers are experiencing the sharpest price increases due to rising costs of robusta beans, higher shipping fees, and escalating labor expenses. Robusta, often considered a lower-tier bean, is the primary ingredient in instant coffee brands, making its price fluctuations particularly impactful.

Additionally, consumers are noticing that certain coffee varieties cost more than others. Questions like “why is decaf coffee more expensive?” and “is whole bean coffee more expensive than ground coffee?” are becoming more common as prices shift.

Single-origin and fair trade coffee brands have also seen price hikes, further adding to the growing cost of specialty brews.
