Elon Musk has built rockets, electric cars, and a social media empire — and along the way, he’s also built one of the most talked-about families in the world. At last count, the world’s richest man has fathered at least 14 children with four different women, and the family tree is still getting updates: the most recent one is a custody battle, not a birth announcement. Musk has been open about wanting a large family, tying it to his oft-repeated concerns about declining global birth rates. Here’s a full, updated breakdown of who’s who.
Justine Wilson: 6 children
Musk’s first wife was Justine Wilson, a Canadian author he met while they were both students at Queen’s University. They married in 2000 and had six children together, all conceived via IVF, before divorcing in 2008.
Nevada Alexander Musk
Born in 2002, Nevada was Musk and Wilson’s first child. He died at just 10 weeks old from complications related to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) — a loss Musk has described as one of the hardest experiences of his life.
Griffin and Vivian
After Nevada’s death, Musk and Wilson pursued IVF again and welcomed twins Griffin and Vivian in April 2004. Vivian came out as transgender in 2022, legally changing her name and taking her mother’s surname. She’s spoken publicly about a strained relationship with her father, saying he wasn’t especially supportive when she came out, and has been openly critical of him since.
Kai, Saxon, and Damian
In 2006, Wilson gave birth to triplets: Kai, Saxon, and Damian. Their exact birth order has never been made public. Damian has reportedly shown a gift for classical music and math — Musk’s own mother, Maye, has said she thinks Damian may be sharper than Musk himself.
Grimes: 3 children
Musk’s relationship with musician Grimes (born Claire Boucher) began in 2018, and the two share three children, though their romantic relationship ended years ago amid an ongoing, sometimes public custody dispute.
X Æ A-Xii
Born in May 2020, Musk and Grimes’s first child together made headlines instantly over his name. Grimes has explained the name as a mix of symbols referencing math, elvish, and aircraft; the couple has given conflicting accounts of how it’s actually pronounced. He was originally registered as “X Æ A-12,” later adjusted to satisfy California naming rules, which don’t allow numerals.
Exa Dark Sideræl
Nicknamed “Y,” Exa was born in December 2021 via surrogate. Grimes has said the name is a nod to computing (an “exa” is a unit of data) paired with a more poetic middle name.
Techno Mechanicus (“Tau”)
The existence of Musk and Grimes’s third child was kept almost entirely private until Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography of Musk referred to Grimes as the mother of three of his children, revealing Tau’s existence to the public.
Shivon Zilis: 4 children
Shivon Zilis, a top executive at Musk’s brain-chip company Neuralink, is the mother of four of his children — the most of any partner besides Wilson. The two have never publicly confirmed a romantic relationship, and most of what’s known about their family has come from Zilis’s own social media posts.
Strider and Azure
Zilis gave birth to twins Strider Sekhar Sirius and Azure Astra Alice in November 2021, though the births weren’t publicly known until the following year. Their names draw on Tolkien, Sanskrit, and Greek references.
Arcadia
Zilis and Musk welcomed a daughter, Arcadia, in 2024.
Seldon Lycurgus
In early 2025, Zilis announced a fourth child with Musk, a son named Seldon Lycurgus, in a social media post timed to Arcadia’s birthday. She didn’t disclose his birth date. Musk responded to the announcement with a heart emoji.
Ashley St. Clair: 1 child — and a very public custody fight
This branch of the family tree has shifted the most since it was first reported, and it’s now genuinely messy. Conservative commentator and writer Ashley St. Clair announced in February 2025 that she’d had a son, born the previous September, and said Musk was the father. Musk initially said publicly he was “uncertain” about paternity while providing financial support — reportedly a $2.5 million payment plus $500,000 a year. St. Clair filed for sole custody and a court-ordered paternity test shortly after going public.
By April 2025, a court-ordered test reportedly found Musk was more than 99.9999% likely to be the boy’s father, though he still hadn’t acknowledged it outright. The bigger turn came in January 2026: after St. Clair posted publicly apologizing for past comments critical of the transgender community — comments she said may have hurt Vivian Wilson, Musk’s transgender daughter — Musk responded by saying he would file for full custody of their son (reportedly named Romulus), citing concern that St. Clair’s statements implied she might “transition” the toddler. St. Clair’s post did not say anything about transitioning their son. That custody case remains unresolved. Separately, St. Clair has also sued Musk’s company xAI, alleging its Grok chatbot generated sexualized deepfake images of her without her consent.
So, how many kids does Elon Musk have?
Adding it up: six with Justine Wilson, three with Grimes, four with Shivon Zilis, and one with Ashley St. Clair brings the widely cited total to 14. Given how openly Musk has talked about wanting more children as part of his pronatalist views, this is a family tree that’s likely to keep growing — and, based on the last year, keep making headlines for the custody fights as much as the births.
