Urgent Recall: Several Canned Tuna Brands Pulled Due to Potential Food Poisoning Risk

Multiple canned tuna brands sold at popular retailers like H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, Publix, and Costco have been recalled due to concerns over potential contamination with botulism, a rare but potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

Tri-Union Seafoods issued a voluntary recall on several of its canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull-tab feature. The affected products were distributed under the following brand labels:

• Genova 7 oz.: Distributed in Costco stores in Florida and Georgia.
• Genova 5 oz.: Available at Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and various independent retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas.
• Van Camp’s: Sold at Walmart and independent stores in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey.

Why Is This Recall Happening?

According to Tri-Union Seafoods, the recall is being conducted “out of an abundance of caution” following a notification from their supplier. The defect in the product seal could lead to leakage or contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism.

While no illnesses have been reported at this time, consumers should not use these products, even if they appear fine.
