A sinkhole emerged in the Pacific Palisades burn area early Wednesday morning after a water main break, causing significant flooding near West Sunset Boulevard and North Las Casas Avenue.
Incident Details
According to reports, a Los Angeles police officer first noticed a large volume of water flowing in the area around 1:30 a.m. Shortly after, the officer reported that a sinkhole had formed due to the water main rupture. The exact cause of the pipe failure and its size remain unknown, as officials from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) have not yet provided details.
Video Footage & Response Efforts
Footage captured from the scene shows fast-moving water gushing through the intersection as DWP crews worked urgently to stop the flow. Emergency response teams are assessing the damage, and authorities are advising residents and commuters to avoid the area until further notice.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials have not yet confirmed whether recent weather conditions or ground instability from past wildfires contributed to the infrastructure failure. The Pacific Palisades region, which has suffered from wildfire damage, may be more susceptible to erosion and ground shifting, increasing the risk of sinkholes.
