Delta Plane Crash Lands and Flips Upside Down in Toronto, Injuring 18

A Delta Air Lines flight carrying 80 people crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, flipping upside down upon impact. The incident left at least 18 people injured, with two passengers in critical condition.

Emergency Response and Passenger Safety Authorities reported that Flight 4819, which originated from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, had four crew members and 76 passengers on board, including 22 Canadians. Despite the alarming nature of the crash, emergency response teams acted swiftly, arriving at the scene within minutes to evacuate passengers and crew members.

“Airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, reaching the site within minutes and quickly evacuating the passengers,” said Deborah Flint, president and CEO of Toronto Pearson International Airport, during a press conference.

Investigation Underway The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is launching a full investigation into the accident, with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from the United States. According to airport Fire Chief Todd Aitken, the runway was dry at the time of the crash, and there were no crosswind conditions that would have contributed to the incident.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has canceled all its remaining Monday flights at Pearson Airport. “The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident,” said Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines, in a public statement.

Weather Conditions and Flight Operations At the time of the crash, meteorologists reported that Toronto was experiencing blowing snow, reduced visibility of six miles, and winds of 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 37 mph. The temperature was recorded at a frigid 17°F, potentially contributing to the challenges faced during landing.

The flight was operated by Endeavor Air, a regional airline that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines. This incident follows a series of aviation accidents in recent weeks, highlighting concerns about air travel safety during severe weather conditions.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed relief that there were no fatalities and assured that provincial officials are working closely with airport authorities to provide necessary assistance. “Provincial officials are in contact with the airport and local authorities and will provide any help that’s needed,” he stated.
