President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, a move that would directly challenge the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Trump stated that “there are methods” to achieve this, while maintaining that it is “far too early to think about it.”

During a Sunday-morning phone call, Trump reinforced that he was “not joking” about a third term and claimed that “a lot of people” want him to run again.

When pressed about specific strategies that could enable him to return to office beyond two terms, he suggested that Vice President JD Vance could run and later hand over the presidency.

However, he remained vague about other possible methods, simply stating, “There are others, too.”

Trump’s Support for a Third Term

This is not the first time Trump has hinted at extending his presidency. His latest remarks have reignited speculation about his long-term political ambitions, with some allies, including Steve Bannon, suggesting that Trump could “run and win again in 2028.”

Additionally, Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., has introduced a resolution advocating for the extension of presidential term limits to facilitate Trump’s continued leadership.

Constitutional Hurdles

The 22nd Amendment clearly limits a U.S. president to two terms. Overturning this would require an arduous process, either through a two-thirds vote in Congress or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of state legislatures, followed by ratification from three-quarters of the states.

Despite these legal obstacles, Trump remains confident in his political standing. He pointed to his poll numbers, stating that “a lot of people would like me to” hold office for a third term.

White House Messaging and Political Symbolism

Trump and his administration have embraced regal imagery in recent messaging. The White House recently shared a social media post quoting Trump’s Truth Social message, “LONG LIVE THE KING,” alongside an image of him wearing a crown. This aligns with previous moments where Trump has likened himself to historical rulers, further fueling speculation about his long-term ambitions.

As discussions around Trump’s political future continue, his comments about a potential third term raise questions about the durability of American democratic traditions and the extent of presidential power.
