President Donald Trump has demanded the removal of his portrait hanging in the Colorado State Capitol, calling it “purposefully distorted” and unfairly painted.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction, stating:
“Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado… was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before. The artist also did President Obama, and he looks wonderful, but the one [of] me is truly the worst. She must have lost her talent as she got older.”
The portrait was created by Colorado Springs-based artist Sarah Boardman and has been on display since 2019. Trump claimed that many Coloradans have complained about the painting and called on Governor Jared Polis to remove it, referring to him as a “Radical Left Governor” and criticizing his stance on crime.
Trump also referenced the Tren de Aragua gang, which had a presence in Aurora, Colorado, and suggested that Polis should be focusing on crime rather than allowing an unflattering portrait of him to remain in the Capitol.
Social Media Reactions
The controversy has sparked discussion online, with reactions ranging from support for Trump’s request to ridicule over his reaction to the portrait.

Historical Context
The portrait was part of a tradition where all U.S. presidents have their likenesses displayed in the State Capitol. In 2018, before Trump’s portrait was installed, a political activist placed a large portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the spot meant for Trump as a prank.
In response to Trump’s complaints, a spokesperson for Governor Polis said:
“Gov. Polis was surprised to learn the President of the United States is an aficionado of our Colorado State Capitol and its artwork… We appreciate the President and everyone’s interest in our capitol building and are always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience.”
