After weeks of speculation, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has officially announced his decision for the upcoming season. After Kansas City lost in the Super Bowl in February 2025, speculation began to grow about whether Kelce would return to the NFL.
Kelce made his announcement through a text message shared on The Pat McAfee Show on February 27. According to McAfee, Kelce wrote,
“I’m coming back for sure next season with the Chiefs. Gonna try and get in the best shape I’ve ever been in this offseason and get back to the mountaintop. Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game. I can’t go out like that!!!!”
His return ends months of uncertainty following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had previously said he wasn’t sure if Kelce would continue playing. Now that Kelce is staying, the Chiefs keep one of their top offensive players as they aim for another Super Bowl run.

Kelce’s contract runs through the 2025 season, and his return ensures he will receive an $11.5 million roster bonus due on March 15. As one of the league’s best tight ends, his leadership and experience will be vital for the team.
His brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, who retired in March 2024, had hinted at Travis’s decision before the official announcement. Speaking on The Steam Room podcast on February 21, Jason said, “I think Travis probably already knows what he wants to do. That’s the reality of it.”
Now that the decision is final, Chiefs fans can look forward to another season with Kelce on the field. With his return and Mahomes leading the team, Kansas City remains a strong contender for another Super Bowl appearance in the 2025 season.

Travis Kelce plays as a tight end, a position that requires both blocking and receiving skills. Tight ends typically last about 8-10 years in the NFL, though elite players like Kelce can extend their careers beyond that with proper conditioning and performance.
