Santorini, Greece – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the island of Santorini on Tuesday, prompting widespread concern and evacuations as the region continues to experience frequent seismic activity. The tremor, which occurred just after 3 p.m. local time, was centered less than 10 miles east of the island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
This latest quake follows a series of temblors in recent days, including a 4.7-magnitude earthquake earlier on Tuesday. The increased seismic activity has led many residents and tourists to leave the island, fearing stronger quakes could follow.
“We are going to leave because I am afraid,” said Beni Ouklala, a 38-year-old worker on the island. “There are constant earthquakes, and we have to leave for the kids so they can calm down.”
Images from Santorini show long lines of people boarding ferries to Piraeus and others catching flights to Athens as a precaution. However, not everyone is choosing to leave. “We will stay here. Why should we leave? If something happens, it happens,” said Eftichis Diamantopoulos, a 63-year-old boat captain.
Authorities have temporarily closed schools on Santorini and neighboring islands, including Anafi, as safety concerns grow. The USGS has recorded hundreds of minor quakes in the Aegean Sea between Santorini and Amorgos in recent days, with magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 5.3.
Santorini, a volcanic island, sits in a region known for its geological activity. While officials continue to monitor the situation, residents and visitors are urged to stay alert for further seismic events.
